With the Democratic parties two nominees in a dead heat and working with all their might to tear each other down, John McCain has a chance to do something truly courageous. He could take this opportunity to distance himself from the radical NeoCon and Religious Right extremists and re declare himself the candidate of real change.

Back in the days of the straight talk express and even as recently as two years ago John McCain was a man dedicated to kicking the special interests out of Washington. He was also far less dedicated to the policy of endless occupation in the middle east. In an interview in 2004 McCain said that ” we must have a plan to bring them home.” Referring to our courageous men and women in uniform.

Since then, in a bid to gain the support of the core he has assumed more and more of a traditional NeoCon position as evidenced by his famous 100 years quote.

Despite the way the quote has been badly characterized by the press and the democratic opposition, it still shows a willingness to accept a permanent American Presence in a hostile country with no apparent plan to end the expense in money and lives. It has also driven a sizable contingent of potential voters to the Democratic camp, the anti war republicans.

With current polls showing as many as 68% of Americans opposed to the war to one degree or another, and a whopping 86% of moderates supporting and end to the Iraqi conflict it is clear that there is a sizable voting bloc that could support McCain if he would just offer them something.

With the bitter Democratic struggle souring voters on both candidates now is the time. With just a bit of moderation on his war policy, McCain could have this election in the bag.
